15 Steps to Finding the Right Affiliate Program to Partner With – Journey to Financial Freedom
How do you find the right affiliate program to partner with? As a working woman and a devoted mother, taking on the Legendary Marketer 15-day challenge was a pivotal moment in my life. Recognizing the need for financial freedom and flexibility to care for my children, I decided to embark on a journey looking into affiliate marketing as my path to financial freedom!
The program has equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge, empowering me to build an online business while balancing my family responsibilities. Through affiliate marketing, I have the freedom to work from home, create my schedule, and be present for my children’s important moments. This journey represents more than just a career choice; it’s my mission to secure a better future for myself and my family, while cherishing the moments that matter most.
One of the key things that I learnt from the Legendary Marketer’s 15 Day Challenge, is to partner with high-ticket affiliate programs. Meaning larger and re-occurring commissions. I started off in the blog looking at low-ticket affiliate programs, Amazon Affiliates is one example, and let me tell you, although they are easy commissions, they are also very low and require high volume if you wish to replace your 9-5! Finding the right high-ticket affiliate program is crucial to ensure you can bring in customers, cultivate repeat business with the same customers, and generate high revenue.
Here’s the ultimate checklist to help you find the perfect affiliate program, along with tips to avoid scams:
- Product/Service Relevance: Ensure the program aligns with your interests, passions, and target audience. This will make it easier to market and connect with potential customers authentically. When you find your niche, as yourself what are problems my niche audience have, and how can I help them answer it. The answer should be the product that you are trying to sell!
- Quality and Reputation: Research the product or service’s quality and reputation in the market. Look for testimonials, reviews, and social proof to gauge its value to customers. I often like to take the course or buy the product before I promote them. You don’t have to, but for me, I find it’s easier for me to market when I know the product. Write a list of pros and cons for the product. Promoting a product that you wouldn’t use yourself, will not result in a successful business. Do not target affiliate programs based off commissions only. Remember the product should be something you love, something you trust and something you believe in!
- Commission Structure: In affiliate marketing, the commission structure refers to the way affiliates are compensated for their promotional efforts and the sales or actions generated through their referrals. It is a crucial aspect of affiliate programs and plays a significant role in attracting and motivating affiliates to promote a particular product or service. The commission structure can vary widely among different affiliate programs and is typically determined by the advertisers or merchants who run the program.
Here are some common commission structures in affiliate marketing:
Percentage-Based Commission: This is the most prevalent type of commission structure. Affiliates earn a percentage of the total sales value generated through their referral links. For example, if the commission rate is 10% and a customer makes a $100 purchase through the affiliate’s link, the affiliate earns $10 in commission.
Flat-Rate Commission: In this structure, affiliates earn a fixed amount for each qualified action, regardless of the purchase value. For instance, an affiliate might earn a $50 flat commission for every lead generated or product sale, regardless of the actual purchase amount.
Tiered Commission: Some affiliate programs offer tiered commission structures, where affiliates can earn higher commission rates as they reach specific performance thresholds. For example, an affiliate might earn a 5% commission on the first $1000 in sales, and if they surpass $1000, their commission rate increases to 8% for additional sales.
Recurring Commission: Certain affiliate programs provide recurring commissions for subscription-based products or services. Affiliates earn commissions on every recurring payment made by the referred customer, as long as the customer remains subscribed.
Two-Tier Commission: In this structure, affiliates not only earn commissions for their direct referrals but also receive a smaller commission on the sales generated by affiliates they’ve recruited to the program. It encourages affiliates to recruit and mentor other marketers to expand the program’s reach.

Cost Per Action (CPA): With CPA commission, affiliates are paid based on specific actions, such as form submissions, sign-ups, downloads, or other non-sales-related activities. The commission is earned when the desired action is completed.
Hybrid Commission: Some affiliate programs combine different commission structures to offer a hybrid approach. For instance, they might provide a lower percentage-based commission along with a flat-rate bonus for achieving specific targets.
The choice of commission structure depends on various factors, including the product or service being promoted, the target audience, and the desired affiliate behaviour. Advertisers design their commission structures strategically to incentivize affiliates to drive quality traffic and conversions, ultimately benefiting both the affiliate and the merchant. Affiliates, in turn, must consider the commission structure when selecting which products or programs to promote to ensure their efforts yield the best returns.

- Cookie Duration: In affiliate marketing, a cookie duration, also known as cookie length or cookie period, refers to the timeframe during which an affiliate can receive credit for a referral made to an advertiser’s website or product. When a user clicks on an affiliate link and is redirected to the advertiser’s website, a small data file called a “cookie” is stored on the user’s browser. The cookie duration determines how long this cookie will remain active on the user’s browser. If the user makes a purchase or completes a desired action within the cookie duration, the affiliate who referred them will receive the commission or credit for that conversion.
For example, if an affiliate program has a cookie duration of 30 days and a user clicks on the affiliate’s link but doesn’t make a purchase immediately, the affiliate will still receive credit for the sale if the user returns and completes the purchase within the next 30 days. However, if the user makes a purchase after the cookie has expired, the affiliate will not receive credit for that specific transaction.
Longer cookie durations are generally preferred by affiliates because they provide a greater window of opportunity to earn commissions from their referrals, especially for products or services that involve a more extended decision-making process. Shorter cookie durations, on the other hand, limit the timeframe for potential conversions and may require affiliates to drive more immediate action from their audience.
It’s essential for affiliates to be aware of the cookie duration when promoting products or services, as it directly impacts their ability to earn commissions and influence their marketing strategies accordingly. Likewise, advertisers must set a cookie duration that strikes the right balance between incentivizing affiliates and aligning with their sales cycle.

- Upsells and Backend Offers: In affiliate marketing, upsells and backend offers are essential components of maximizing revenue and increasing the value of each customer acquired through the affiliate’s promotional efforts. They are strategies employed by advertisers or merchants to increase the average order value and lifetime customer value. Let’s take a closer look at each of these concepts:
Upsells:
An upsell is an offer made to a customer after they have made an initial purchase. It involves encouraging the customer to buy a more expensive or upgraded version of the product they originally intended to purchase. The upsell typically complements the initial purchase and offers additional features, benefits, or enhancements. For example, when a customer buys a basic software package through an affiliate link, they may be presented with an upsell for the premium version of the software with more advanced features at a discounted price.
From an affiliate marketing perspective, upsells can be highly beneficial for affiliates. When a customer accepts the upsell offer, the affiliate earns a commission on the upsell purchase as well, increasing their overall earnings from that single transaction. Affiliates can actively promote products with upsell funnels to increase their potential commission per customer and provide added value to their audience.
Backend Offers:
Backend offers, also known as one-time offers (OTOs), are additional offers presented to customers after they have completed the initial purchase and accepted any upsells. These offers are typically complementary products or services that align with the customer’s interests or needs. For example, after buying a digital camera through an affiliate link, the customer may receive a backend offer for camera accessories like lenses, tripods, or memory cards.
Similar to upsells, backend offers can significantly boost the affiliate’s earnings. When customers accept backend offers, affiliates receive additional commissions on these sales, further increasing the value of each customer they refer. Backend offers can also lead to increased customer satisfaction as customers find value in the related products or services offered, enhancing the overall shopping experience.
To effectively leverage upsells and backend offers as an affiliate marketer, it’s crucial to choose affiliate programs that implement these strategies. Additionally, affiliates should focus on promoting products with appealing upsell and backend offer funnels that align with their audience’s interests. By providing value through these additional offers, affiliates can not only increase their revenue but also build stronger relationships with their audience and the merchants they promote.

- Marketing Support: In affiliate marketing, marketing support plays a vital role in empowering affiliates to effectively promote products or services and drive successful conversions. Marketing support encompasses a range of resources and assistance provided by the advertiser or merchant to their affiliates. It aims to equip affiliates with the tools, knowledge, and guidance needed to maximize their promotional efforts and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. Here are some essential aspects of marketing support from an affiliate marketing perspective:
Creatives and Marketing Materials: Advertisers often provide affiliates with a variety of creative assets, such as banners, product images, videos, and text ads. These ready-to-use marketing materials make it easier for affiliates to showcase the products or services to their audience in an engaging and visually appealing way.
Custom Affiliate Links: Affiliates receive unique affiliate tracking links that identify them as the source of the referral. These customized links enable accurate tracking of conversions and ensure that affiliates receive proper credit for the sales they generate.
Product Information and Training: Detailed product information, sales copy, and marketing guidelines are shared with affiliates to help them understand the product’s features, benefits, and target audience. Some affiliate programs may also offer training sessions or webinars to educate affiliates on effective marketing strategies.
Affiliate Support Managers: Larger affiliate programs often assign dedicated affiliate managers to support affiliates. These managers serve as points of contact for any queries or concerns related to the program and offer personalized assistance and guidance.
Performance Analytics and Reporting: Affiliates benefit from access to performance analytics and reporting tools. These insights allow them to monitor their promotional efforts’ effectiveness, track conversions, and optimize their marketing strategies based on real-time data.
Exclusive Promotions and Incentives: Advertisers may offer exclusive promotions, discounts, or bonuses to affiliates to incentivize increased efforts and drive more conversions. These exclusive deals can be powerful motivators for affiliates to actively promote the products.
Affiliate Contests and Rewards: To encourage healthy competition among affiliates, some programs host contests with attractive rewards for top-performing affiliates. These contests can create excitement and camaraderie among affiliates, leading to increased promotion and engagement.
Affiliate Community and Forums: Many affiliate programs maintain online communities or forums where affiliates can interact, share experiences, and learn from one another. These communities foster a sense of belonging and support, creating a positive environment for affiliate marketers.
Effective marketing support is crucial for building strong affiliate partnerships and fostering a successful affiliate program. By providing affiliates with the necessary resources and assistance, advertisers can empower them to promote products confidently, drive valuable traffic, and contribute to the program’s overall success. Additionally, happy and supported affiliates are more likely to remain loyal and continue promoting the products for the long term.

- Training and Education: As a newcomer to affiliate marketing, access to training and educational resources can be immensely helpful to enhance your skills and knowledge.
- Affiliate Manager Support: Look for programs that offer dedicated affiliate managers who can assist you with any queries or challenges you may encounter.
- Payment Terms: Payment terms in affiliate marketing refer to the agreed-upon terms and conditions under which affiliates are compensated for their promotional efforts. These terms outline how and when affiliates will receive their commissions for generating sales or other desired actions through their referral links. Payment terms are essential for establishing a transparent and mutually beneficial relationship between the affiliate and the advertiser or merchant running the affiliate program. Here are some key aspects of payment terms in affiliate marketing:
Commission Structure: Payment terms often begin with the commission structure, which defines the percentage or flat-rate commission that affiliates will earn for each successful referral or sale. The commission structure can vary based on the product or service being promoted and the specific affiliate program.
Payment Schedule: The payment schedule outlines when affiliates will receive their commissions. Common payment schedules include weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly payments. Some programs have a delayed payment schedule, where commissions earned in a specific period are paid out after a set time, often to account for potential refunds or chargebacks.
Minimum Payout Threshold: Many affiliate programs set a minimum payout threshold, which is the minimum amount an affiliate must earn before they are eligible to receive a payment. Once the affiliate’s earnings exceed this threshold, they can request a payout.
Payment Methods: The available payment methods are specified in the payment terms. These methods can include direct bank transfers, PayPal, check payments, or other electronic payment options. Affiliates should ensure they have access to their preferred payment method to receive their earnings efficiently.
Hold Periods: Some affiliate programs implement hold periods, during which commissions are held for a certain duration before being paid out. This practice helps prevent fraud and ensures the quality and legitimacy of the referrals.
Payment Currency: The payment terms should clarify the currency in which the affiliate will be paid. Depending on the program’s location and the affiliates’ locations, payments may be made in various currencies.
Clawbacks and Chargebacks: The payment terms may address situations where commissions need to be reversed due to customer chargebacks or refunds. In some cases, affiliates may be required to return the commission earned from a sale that was later refunded by the customer.
Reporting and Transparency: A transparent reporting system should be in place, allowing affiliates to track their earnings, conversions, and commission calculations. Clear and accessible reporting helps affiliates stay informed about their performance and earnings.
It is crucial for affiliates to review and understand the payment terms before joining an affiliate program. By doing so, they can ensure that the program aligns with their financial expectations and payment preferences. Advertisers must also adhere to these terms to maintain trust and foster positive relationships with their affiliates. Clear and fair payment terms contribute to a successful and harmonious affiliate marketing partnership.
- Competitive Advantage: Assess how the product or service offered by the affiliate program stands out from competitors. Having a unique selling proposition can make your marketing efforts more effective.
In affiliate marketing, competitive advantage refers to the unique strengths and strategies that set an affiliate apart from others in the same niche or industry. This advantage could be based on the affiliate’s deep knowledge of their target audience, the ability to create compelling and engaging content, access to exclusive promotions, or strong relationships with merchants. By leveraging their competitive advantage, affiliates can attract more traffic, build a loyal following, and drive higher conversions, ultimately leading to greater success in the competitive affiliate marketing landscape.
- Demand and Market Trends: Analyse the market demand and trends for the product or service. It’s essential to promote something that people are actively seeking. Remember, what are the problems my target audience would have, and how do I provide a product that can solve that problem?
In affiliate marketing, staying attuned to demand and market trends is essential for success. Affiliates must continuously monitor consumer preferences, emerging products, and industry shifts to tailor their promotional efforts accordingly. By aligning their marketing strategies with current demand and market trends, affiliates can position themselves to capitalize on popular products and tap into growing audience interests, leading to higher conversions and increased affiliate revenue.
- Transparency and Communication: Look for programs that are transparent about their terms, conditions, and updates. Clear communication is a sign of a reputable program.
- Check for Reviews and Testimonials: Search for reviews and testimonials from other affiliate marketers who have worked with the program. This can give you valuable insights into their experiences. One thing that helped me a lot, is to read the google reviews!
- Avoiding Scams: Be cautious of programs that make unrealistic promises of overnight riches or require significant upfront investments. Do thorough research on the company and its reputation before joining.
As a working mother, balancing your time between affiliate marketing and other responsibilities is essential. Dedicate time each day to learn, strategize, and execute your marketing plans. Stay consistent and patient, as success in affiliate marketing takes time and effort.
Remember, finding the right affiliate program is a crucial foundation for your success.
