10 Effective Strategies for Managing Work Stress

Work-related stress is a common challenge that most individuals face in their professional lives. Excessive stress can have a detrimental impact on both our physical and mental health wellbeing. It can affect our productivity, job satisfaction and overall quality of life. However, with the right steps, it will allow you to effectively manage work stress and maintain a healthy work life balance. Let’s explore 10 practical ways to help you better cope with work related stress.

  1. Stay organised and prioritise your to do list regularly by using a planner

One often feels overwhelmed particularly due to an excessive workload. What often works for me is to create a to do list by using a planner. I then regularly review my to do list on a weekly and daily basis. This allows to prioritize the tasks listed and breaks them down into manageable steps. By establishing clear priorities, I can tackle tasks systematically and reduce my stress.

  1. Effective Time Management

This is crucial for stress reduction. By doing your to-do list weekly and daily, this allows me to plan my day and the week ahead. I allocate specific time slots for different tasks. I avoid multitasking large tasks as it can lead to errors, decreased productivity, and increased stress. I usually focus on one task at a time and set realistic deadlines to avoid unnecessary pressure. I make use of my Outlook Diary by booking myself ‘protected time’ to ensure I can meet deadlines. Blocking out times in my diary ensures that other staff do not request a meeting during this protected work time. 1. Knowing when to ask for help

If there are tasks in which I am unsure of where to start, I identify this early and ask for help. It is better to ask for assistance early as this not only relieves stress but also alerts the team that the project or task may be better suited to another role or may require more than one person. 1. Setting boundaries

Establishing clear boundaries between work and personal life is vital for managing stress. I avoid bringing work-related concerns into my personal life, by ensuring that when I am at work, I use my time wisely and avoid having to bring work home. It is especially crucial if you are a working mother like me, to ensure you are protective of your family and personal time.

Avoid picking up phone calls or setting up email alerts on your personal phone. Do not be afraid to refer urgent phone calls/emails onto another team member whilst it is your day off. My apple watch helps me leave work on time, by setting myself an alarm.

  1. Practice Stress-Relief Techniques

Incorporate stress-relief techniques into your daily routine to counteract work related stress. Deep breathing exercises, meditation, mindfulness, and physical activity, such as yoga or walking, can help alleviate tension and promote relaxation. Find what works for you and make it a regular part of your day. See our post on meditation for the working female, here.

  1. Forster Supportive Relationships and practice effective Communication

Maintaining positive relationships with colleagues can significantly impact your stress levels at work. Cultivate a supportive network of coworkers whom you can confide in and seek advice or assistance from. Sharing experiences and challenges can provide a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of isolation.

Improving communication skills can contribute to a more harmonious work environment and reduce stress. Clearly express your thoughts, concerns, and expectations to colleagues and supervisors. Active listening and empathy also play a vital role in effective communication, fostering understanding and reducing potential conflicts. Improve Your People Skills: Build and Manage Relationships, Communicate Effectively, Understand Others, and Become The Ultimate People Person by Patrick King is a really good book to read.

  1. Take Regular Breaks

Allow yourself regular breaks throughout the workday. Step away from your desk, stretch your legs, and engage in activities that help you recharge. Taking short breaks enhances focus and productivity, reduces stress, and prevents burnout.

  1. Seek Support

Don’t hesitate to seek support when work stress becomes overwhelming. Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional who can provide guidance and perspective. Employee assistance programs (EAPs) or counselling services available at work can also be valuable resources.

  1. Take Care of Your Physical Health

Maintaining good physical health is essential for stress management. Prioritize regular exercise, eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and get enough sleep. A healthy body is better equipped to handle stress and helps improve overall resilience.

  1. Develop Hobbies and Interests Outside of Work

Engage in activities outside of work that bring you joy. Pursuing hobbies, spending time with family and friends, and participating in activities unrelated to work can provide an outlet for stress relief and rejuvenation.

While work stress is an inevitable part of many professional lives, implementing these 10 strategies can help you effectively manage and reduce its impact. And remember work is just work, it should not overtake your family and personal life!
